The string quartet is definitely one of the most beautiful instrumental combinations that exist, especially for chamber music lovers. Tens of thousands of compositions have been written for the combination of 2 violins, viola and cello, including many masterpieces.
But how did it start and how did it get to the point where hundreds of string quartets are still being composed every year and hundreds of ensembles perform string quartets in this formation? Was Haydn "the inventor of the string quartet" or not? No, he wasn't, but he did play a decisive role.
Partly on the basis of previous experiences and requests, violinist and violist Wouter Schmidt got the idea to take a closer look at the history and development of the string quartet as a composition and ensemble during a kind of 'study weekend'.
