The Matangi Quartet plays these works with flawless technical engagement. But that alone is only the basis for an interpretation. And there the four offer everything to bring the music to life. Perhaps the most familiar work, Shostakovich’s 8th Quartet, is driven into existential corners, much as the composer himself felt for much of his life. But this should not lead one to believe that the Matangi Quartet unilaterally follows such a path. Rather, they tread a path illuminated in many directions, presenting not only force, despair and anguish, but also carefully formulated delicate passages and fine detail work.
