#90seconds

In 2014 we recorded the CD JAZZICS!. For this CD we were looking for compositions which are denying their musical borders. Compositions written by classical composers but with a clear jazz approach, and pieces by jazz composers who wanted to look beyond the boundaries of jazz.

Last Tuesday we have had the privilege to extend our #90Seconds project with a flood of new compositions and of course we’ve recorded this with audio and visuals in the gorgeous church of Beets.

For my 19th birthday my dear friend and amazing jazz-violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma gave me a CD that changed my life. A few years before that, we had listened to the beautiful album ‘The Juliet Letters’ by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet and I loved the sound of the quartet and the freedom in music making of the quartet members.

Studying and rehearsing is fun and always necessary, but it is usually only possible to get to the core of the matter on stage. Then suddenly things happen that you have never taken into account or were unable to take into account.

When we came with this idea, a lot of different composers crossed our minds. Naturally we stumbled upon this one important question: “Where will we record all this beautiful music?”

During our first online meeting after the corona lockdown, the four of us came up with the idea of the #90seconds project. Composers were mentioned, making a video would be the ideal way of presenting the pieces and most of all: we wanted to create something special with Matangi and the composers.

We have daily contact using chat and mail, but since 16 March the physical meetings are limited to a minimum. Never in 20 years have we seen each other so little, which is all unreal. This is not to say that we have nothing to do, because we are working hard behind the scenes.
